C’est ‘Branché’! A French Bistro Experience in Senopati Jakarta

In France, a bistro means a small restaurant that serves moderately-priced meals in a modest setting. This is where you can usually find home style and more rustic meals that are far from the rigorous fine dining standards.

Following the ever increasing number of spots in Jakarta that’s eager to adopt ‘the Parisian way of eating & drinking’, comes Branché, a casual French style bistro in the uber hip neighborhood of Senopati. The word branché itself is the slang word for hip or trendy in colloquy French, and it seems that such is what the place would want to appear.

Spanning three floors complete with attic and roof top area, Branché probably has one of the most spacious dining area in the neighborhood. The theme of the design is the evidently still popular industrial style interior and exterior; with exposed floor, walls, black partitions, frames and windowpanes, to the metal stair cases. This place definitely sings out ‘warehouse chic’ loud and clear.

branche_jakarta_senopati 5

What I do love the most though, is their attic space in the third floor with its glass rooftop that promises an abundant of natural light during the day (perfect for those bright instagram shots) and beautiful view of the night sky at night. The attic area leads to the open air rooftop with a sweeping view of SCBD’s skyscrapers, both with minimum spending cap.

Helmed by Chef Raka Wiradhika that has quite the experience working around the world, Branché’s food consists of not just french-inspired food, but almost anything that’s popular for the Jakarta masses; from light bites, sandwiches, meat, poultry and fish main courses, to pasta, pizza, and even the Asian favorites that are pretty much omnipresent in Jakarta’s cafes and, in this case, bistros.

For starter, I tried the Seaweed Salad, with the sweetened crystal seaweed on a bed of lettuce, tumbled with corn kernels, whole cashews, sliced apples, oranges and a drizzle of sweet lemon dressing. Definitely a very nutritious salad packed with a lot of crunch.

seaweed_salad

For main course, I tried two of their five signature dishes; first the Wild Salmon Marine, with panko-crusted salmon served with pureed potatoes naturally colored green with herbs, served with sauteed shimeji mushrooms and torched Japanese cucumber. The panko did give the salmon a pleasant texture, and the fish meat was cooked to perfection.

I also tried the Chicken Au Vin, two pieced of chicken thigh braised in red wine sauce, served with pieces of carrots, mushrooms and shallots on a big portion of mashed potato. Definitely a rustic meal that’s fit to feed two.

I hardly had room for anything more but before I can complain, my Creme Brûlée Muffin came to my table. And it is exactly that, a large vanilla muffin that has been scooped out to give room for the creme brûlée or french egg custard, and garnished with berries. But instead of sprinkled with sugar and torched for its characteristic layer of caramel, chef Raka gives caramel lovers even better substitute with a brandy caramel tuile on top.

As the night falls, I saw more people coming in and crowding around the bar. And who doesn’t like to end a meal with a slight tipple? I tried one of Branché’s signature cocktail, the Fleur De Lis with vodka, lychee liquor, white wine, soda, and dill leaves. Such a refreshing end note! Other than the cocktails, Branche also offers a good selection of drinks, both alcohol and non-alcoholic. For the coffee, they don’t beat around the bush and opt for the trusted Tanamera blends and brews.

Profile of The Month: Chef Ahmad Jamil, Al Nafoura Le Meridien Jakarta

If you’re a fan of middle eastern cuisine, you’ve probably heard and dined in Le Meridien’s Al Nafoura Jakarta– where you can find a wide range of middle eastern, especially Lebanese cuisine. We recently chatted with Chef Ahmad Jamil, its new young chef that has quite the experience with his home cooking:

Chef Ahmad Jamil_alnafoura

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Although I have Palestinian background, I was born and raised in Jordan. I started my caree’ really early, when I was just about 16 years old in Intercontinental hotel in Amman, Jordan while doing hotel school at the same time. After working a few years in Jordan, I started to look for opportunities outside my country. So when I was 20 I moved to Russia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Malaysia, then to here in Jakarta; All in 5 star hotels, and most of it in Starwood.

How do you like living in Jakarta?

I joined Le Meridien in February 2015, so I have been here roughly a year.  Other than the traffic, it’s a great city. Thankfully I don’t need to commute so I don’t need to deal with it too much.

Can you tell us a little bit the essence of Al Nafoura?

Al Nafoura itself means ‘fountain’ in Arabic, which in the past, nearly all Middle Eastern terraces have, where people would relax and cool off. It is also where people would have shisha, coffee, and have something to eat. Where families relax, chat, spend time with the family. So this is the concept. Here in the restaurant, of course we extend the concept for business functions; that’s why we also provide private rooms for meetings and gatherings.

For the food, we are focus on Lebanese cuisine which I think it is pretty suitable for Indonesians, and already quite popular here.

What are the characteristics in Lebanese cuisine?

For starters, there’s the cold mezze platter, with a number of typical condiments and bites such as the hommos, tabouleh, samboussek; the main course is mostly lamb, like our signature dish, the lamb shank, or the lamb kofta kebab. For vegetables, we incorporate a lot of onion, garlic, coriander, mint, parsley, and a lot of aromatic herbs.

We sometimes group Middle Eastern food into one category, what do you think?

Some areas can be grouped into the same category; for example when you say Lebanese, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, we do basically have the same food, just slightly different rendition.  Gulf country is different, and North African is also totally different (morocco, Tunisia, etc.).  So I think the real different is between these three regions.

But in Al Nafoura, despite the food being Lebanese, every month we have different promotions. Two months ago we had food from the gulf area; last month we have shell fish, and after that we bring the North African cuisine. So we try to expand our horizon as well, though only slightly.

Did you ever need to compromise/local taste?

Not really. It’s all pretty much authentic. Middle Eastern food is different, but I think it can easily be accepted by the Indonesian palate. Although our cuisine is not spicy, but we have middle eastern style spicy sauce that you can add to anything.

What are your recommendations in Al Nafoura?

The cold mezze starter is as must try, enjoyed with our fresh from the oven pita bread. For mains, I recommend our grilled items, especially our signature lamb shanks. Our lamb is not ‘smelly’ at all, and very very tender.

What’s your favourite Indonesian food?

I like the sambal iga with rice. I also love Rendang that I always get when I was living in Dubai, from an Indonesian restaurant that I go to, run by an Indonesian migrant.

What do you do in your free time?

I like to travel. That’s why I love my job. In Jakarta, I usually just stay in the city on the weekends, but when there’s a long break I like to go for a quick getaway, Bandung, Lombok, Bogor, etc. But I haven’t gone to Bali because I want to stay longer. maybe this year!

What’s your style of cooking?

I want to give more of a rustic and home-style cooking, real and authentic. I want guests from the Middle East to feel at home when they come in here. I want to take them to where they’re from with our food.

Have your guests asked you to cook anything special?

I have one German chef coming here that spent 10 years in Dubai. He asked for a traditional food in Emirates, which takes an hour to cook. He said that he’d wait, and he did! We also had the Ambassador of Palestine & Jordan coming with 30 other VIP asking for full course with Chicken Maklouba casserole.

What’s New Jakarta thanks Chef Ahmad Jamil & his team for the warm welcome to the beautiful restaurant. To taste Chef Jamil’s rustic middle eastern cooking or for a one of a kind middle eastern feast, visit  Al Nafoura at Le Meridien Jakarta

Plataran L’Harmonie at West Bali National Park Becomes the New World Destination

Plataran Bali Destination 1West Bali National Park is becoming a new world destination (New World Wonder Destination), being the primary habitat of the Bali Starling bird or Jalak Bali (Leucopsar Rothschildi). Bali Starling is an exotic, rare, endangered and protected bird, of which their population is estimated to only be a few in the world, hence they are considered as a World Heritage. Bali Starling only lives and is only found in the forest at the West Bali National Park. These birds are the only Bali endemic species and in 1991 was named the faunal emblem of Bali Province. The existence of this endemic bird is protected by law.

Apart from being a habitat of the Bali Starling, the West Bali National Park is also home to a variety of flora such as mangrove forests, as well as a variety of fauna such as deer, monkeys, and pheasants. The forests in the West Bali National Park is an especially unique forest, as it changes colors during the dry and rainy seasons. The West Bali National Park is located directly opposite the Menjangan Island; a popular world destination for divers, due to its dropfoffs, cliffs, and coral reefs as well as bio marine life. Menjangan Island is also still inhabited by deers and is home to one of the seven most sacred and charming Hindu temples in Bali.
