Jakarta New Dining: Sixth on The Rooftop

sort_foodThe rooftop trend is not going away anytime soon, seems like. As a city with growing number of skyscrapers, it seems like the only thing that Jakarta can consider as ‘landscape’ is its buildings and skyline.

Located in the 6th floor of the new Cordela Norwood Hotel, Menteng, Jakarta,  Sixth on Roof Top realizes this and claims that its height, offers the perfect height to enjoy Jakarta’s skyline.

Dominated in white white touches of minimalist black lines, SORT aims produce minimalist European style interior, and ultimately to create ‘instagrammable’ spots. How a place in Jakarta would survive without it!

CORDELA NORWOOD HOTEL_3Sixth On Roof Top offers a general mix of popular Asian and International food. “Not only delicious, but we want to offer food that is also healthy, and affordable. All our drinks are also non-alcoholic.” Said Dr. Ivan Sini, founder of Sixth on Roof Top who is also a famed ob-gyn doctor behind Bunda Hospital.

The menu ranges from favorite light bites such as French Fries, Sweet Soya Chicken Wings, Beef Rolled Enoki Cheese, Fried Banana Rolls to main courses such as BBQ Sixth On Roof Top Ribs with Green Pea Soup, pasta, and refreshing drinks.

For coffee, Sixth On Rooftop teams up with Tanamera Coffee for their artisan coffees, to be enjoyed while gazing at Jakarta’s occasionally beautiful sunset or its twinkling skyscrapers at night time.

Profile of The Month: Fintan O’Doherty, GM of The Sultan Hotel Jakarta

The Sultan Hotel & Residence Jakarta, has quite the reputation as one of the largest and longest running hotels in Jakarta. It prides itself as a luxury hotel with Javanese ‘royal hospitality’, reflected in its design as well as their courteous service. But the hotel industry in Indonesia, is most thriving than ever. Dozens of hotels are popping up in all corners of the city, and a number of international luxury chains made its way to add competition to Jakarta’s hotel market. We sat down with The Sultan Hotel’s newly appointed General Manager Fintan O’Doherty, to discuss his hotel.

Gm sultan JakartaWhat do you think are Sultan Hotel’s strengths?
I would say, our very strategic location and the size of our property which include our sizable gardens. Our heritage too; I think the fact that we’ve been around for a long time, so everyone knows about the hotel. Sometimes people forget that we do have 700 rooms operating, so even when we are renovating, we are still a significant player in the industry. But of course we are currently doing massive reconstructions of major parts of the hotel.

What do you have coming up this year?
Currently we have 380 bedrooms that currently under re-construction, as we are going to convert them into 180 suites. Additionally, we are also building a massive ball room and conference center that will be able to accommodate 3000 people, set to open this July.  Of course last year, we opened our Lagoon Garden as a marquee that can fit up to 1600 people for weddings.

When is new suites going to be ready?
I’ll say around the 1st quarter of 2019, and not only the rooms, but also the swimming pools and other facilities as well including the Kudus Bar located in the main tower that used to be very famous in Jakarta that we plan to revive. It’s like building an entire new hotel, almost. It’s going to be fantastic.

What kind of travelers that’s your main market.
We have a lot of Indonesian leisure guests and a lot of Indonesian business travelers that has been coming here for years and years. After that, we have a lot of Chinese, Japanese and Korean business travelers, many of those are here for trade show or exhibitions in the Jakarta Convention Center which is just located next door and accessible without having to go out in traffic.

How do you keep up with the competition?
I think constant training and retraining of our staff is very important. On the other hand, we are fortunate to have senior staffs that have been with us for a long time. For them traditional Indonesian hospitality comes naturally. Some of them have been here for more than 25 years and has learned different skills, working in different parts of the hotel. Secondly, we have a lot of trainees that are learning skills from all the senior staffs. We try to make sure that service is as seamless as possible, and utmost attention to the detail.

What’s your opinion of Jakarta, from an expat point of view?
We all complain about the traffic, but traffic is proof that there is something happening in the city. Of course we wished for less traffic but it won’t get better overnight. Jakarta is not really a tourist city, and more of a commercial hub. And there are definitely a lot of things that are happening in it.

What do you love the most about the city?
I like Jakarta because it is vibrant. It’s got a lot of life to it, it’s fast paced, a has a lot of young people in it.

How would you promote Jakarta to people back home?
I’ll talk about the people because they are genuinely hospitable and friendly. There’s a lot more English spoken too, compared to a lot of other Asian countries.

5 words that describe The Sultan.
Heritage, Service, Friendliness, Royal Hospitality

What’s New Jakarta would like to thank Mr. Fintan O’Doherty and his team for the time spared for the interview. For more information about Sultan Hotel, visit http://www.sultanjakarta.com

Flavors of Aceh to Sulawesi at Mercure PIK’s NSNTR

Over the last 15 years, Pantai Indah Kapuk in the north of Jakarta has become one of the most prestigious areas in Jakarta. Not only for its rapid growth of upscale housings, but also for its concentration of trendy restaurants and cafes that could make residents from other parts of Jakarta, like the South, which used to be the only source for anything cool in Jakarta, both jealous and hungry at the same time.

The most recent addition to Jl PIK Boulevard, one of the main roads that’s packed with the aforementioned trendy spots, is PIK Avenue, a shopping center that is connected to the newly opened Mercure PIK Hotel. The hotel is currently the only mid-scale hotel in the vicinity, and offers a great acommodation option for anyone that wants to explore the neighborhood without having to brace for the weekend PIK traffic.

mercure pik_1

mercure pik_2On my first visit to the hotel, I also tried their all day dining restaurant, NSNTR ( read: Nusantara) that appropriately focuses on Indonesian food, from Aceh to Sulawesi. Just like the rest of the hotel, the design is modern yet full of character, simple yet refreshingly vibrant. From the use of contrasting colors, to dramatic sizes and shapes. Located on the 8th floor of the hotel, NSNTR is currently the tallest restaurant in Pantai Indah Kapuk too, which gives you a great bird’s eye view of PIK.

The menu offering, thankfully, isn’t trying to be excessively modern. You will find basic Indonesian favorites like Mie Goreng, Rendang, Tongseng, Sate, as well as different types of sambals. Things are kept authentic, can be seen from the dish’s area of origin written on each menu item. Each table is served with complimentary kerupuk and also, pickles!

NSNTR mercure pik_nasi goreng

NSNTR mercure pik_pisang goreng

For me, Mie Goreng is always a comfort food, so I will be completely biased and put this on the top of my favorite food in the restaurant. Their rendang is quite good too, and can contend your go-to Padang place.

My other favorite is the Iga Sapi Kuah Asam which broth is sour, spicy, and deep in flavor. I don’t care much about their bakso, but the Ayam Goreng Tangkap is nicely seasoned and served with deep fried chili padis that will tempt you to eat it straight. The Nasi Goreng Rendang is also a great choice if you are in the mood for both nasi goreng, and rendang!

For desserts, Must try items for desserts are the fluffy and creamy durian pancake, and the pisang goreng, served with cheese, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. For an even more refreshing treat, you can opt for the classic Es Cendol Durian served with black sticky rice, fresh durian, and coconut ice cream.

A  perfect getaway destination.

Moreover, weekenders will not run out of things to do with horse-riding and traditional games activities, and swimming pools both for adult and kids.
