This Week’s News Updates and Oktoberfest 2015

The Jakarta administration plans to issue a regulation encouraging the use of more LED-lit billboards, in a bid to make the capital look more like Tokyo or Hong Kong. Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said last week that he hoped to persuade building managers and owners to plaster their properties with billboards, with the inducement of a waiver on the outdoor advertising tax. In exchange, though, the city administration will ask for a 30 percent of the profit generated by the advertising. He said he hoped the new scheme would transform Jakarta’s skyline to rival the neon-lit cities of Tokyo or Hong Kong.

The haze caused by the Sumatera fire continues to choke as the The Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) reached a hazardous level on Saturday in several cities, including in Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan, Pontianak in West Kalimantan and in Riau’s cities of Pekanbaru, Kampar, Bengkalis, and neighbouring countries of Malaysia and Singapore, where anger is rising as a thick haze engulfs the city-state, causing schools to be shut down. Land and forest fires are expected to continue until the end of November if preventive measures are not taken. The dry weather, limited supply of water and equipment, as well as the vast areas that have caught fire remain the main challenges for emergency personnel fighting the blazes.

What do you think our government should do to tackle the ongoing haze problem? Share your opinion with us here, and don’t forget to keep http://ift.tt/1xfYjhf bookmarked for the latest events, deals, and more exciting articles.

Last but not least, don’t forget to secure your ticket to the Oktoberfest celebration in Indonesia’s only German microbrewery, Paulaner Brauhaus in Kempinski Jakarta from 7 to 10 October 2015. One entrance pass to the Paulaner Oktoberfest includes our famous family-style Bavarian food plus free flow of special Oktoberfest Bier and is priced at IDR 990,000 net per person. Celebrating ‘Betawi’ Cuisine at Kembang Goyang

Jakarta has long been a port city, where people from all over the world meet and cultures intertwine. In its early days, traders from china, India, and neighboring ports come and add colour to the then Dutch’s main port called Batavia. Today, Jakarta still lives up to its legacy and is Indonesia’s main melting pot.  Those living in the city are spoilt by option, particularly on food, and it is easy to overlook that Jakarta has its own culinary gem, the Betawi food.

Betawi cuisine, like its culture, is rich, diverse and eclectic and is in fact really similar to Peranakan cuisine, as both are hybrid cuisine heavily influenced by Chinese and Malay, as well as Arab and European cuisine, to neighboring Sundanese and Javanese cuisine. You can find and sample Betawi food everywhere, from the street vendors, to premium restaurants, like Discovery Ancol’s Kembang Goyang Restaurant. The name Kembang Goyang or directly translated as ‘Shaking Flower’ is taken from the traditional Betawi snack of the same name, made by dipping sweet batter in a hot oil, with the help of a flower-shaped iron stamp.

kembanggoyang2kembanggoyang_discoveryancol

balconyThe ambiance is airy with subtle and contemporary touch of Betawi architecture. My favorite is the large balcony overlooking the Dunia Fantasi, a perfect place for a relaxing dinner or afternoon supper.

The first dish I tried in the restaurant is the Soto Tangkar. Although it is not quite as popular as its Betawi counterpart of Soto Betawi or Sop Kambing, Soto Tangkar is one of the most authentic Betawi dishes you can find. It is nearly similar to Soto Betawi, using thinned down coconut’s milk, but Soto Tangkar is richer in spice, resulting a yellow and almost reddish broth. And instead of using cow offal like lungs, tripe, and other organ meats, Tangkar usually beef ribs or slightly fatty beef cuts, slow cooked in the coconut’s milk mixture. In street vendors, you will usually get random and haphazardly cut beef ribs, but Kembang Goyang’s Soto Tangkar is loaded with nicely cut, thick, and succulent beef cuts. The broth has been cooked to perfection too, and perfect with a portion of steaming rice, pickles, and emping or the traditional bitter crackers.

SOTOTANGKAR3

Although the portion was good for two persons, I could not help but to try the Nasi Goreng Nyak Babe (Mom & Dad’s Fried Rice), a traditional Fried Rice with lamb and middle-eastern inspired spices, think of Briyani or the traditional Middle Eastern lamb rice, but with the Indonesian touch of stir-frying.

For desserts, what’s more fitting than to try the namesake of the restaurant, the Kembang Goyang. Although instead of the version commonly found elsewhere, the pastry chefs at Discovery Hotel came up with a more whimsical Kembang Goyang flavored with various flavors and dipped with colorful chocolate.

kembanggoyang_

Other than the Betawi cuisine, Kembang Goyang also serves other Asian and some western favorites, making it a perfect choice for dining option for your Ancol excursion for the whole family!  Kembang Goyang is also where the hotel serves its breakfast, lunch, and barbecues buffets, with 200 seats capacity with one private room, bar and lounge also.

Is Golfing Dangerous for Your Spine?

GOLFAHOLIC2

GOLFaholics…is golf good for you? What you are about to read may either enlighten or anger you. Read for more information… Golfers are dedicated with an enormous amount of loyalty and tenacity. Waking up at 3am in the morning to get the golf course far away just to get that first swing. I only know of photographers who are just as fanatical trying to capture that golden hour. Rain or shine, you are out there. Admit it, golf is addictive. The pursuit to getting that perfect hit. Trying to replicate that smooth sailing projectile flying through the air and landing ever so close to an almost hole-in-one. Many hours of bending over. Whacking that ball over and over and over again at the driving range. One bucket after another. 50 to 100 balls within an hour. Repetitive one directional rotation. Is this good for your spine?

In 2009, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), reported that more than 55,000 visits to hospital emergency rooms were related to sport injuries. What sport injury are we referring to? Good heavens…don’t say it? It can’t be! You are not talking about…? Yes…it is GOLF.

GOLFAHOLIC

Quite often, golfers will experience some discomfort, pain or numbness in the wrist, shoulder, back, hips and knees. Even the neck! The most common complaint is low back pain. When hitting the ball, so many things can go wrong. Your spine and the repetitive training, re-education of altering your body’s natural biomechanics, excessive torsioning of the lower back and pelvis, are the greatest contributor to spine and disc injuries. Poor flexibility and muscle strength further increases your risk of injury. Warming up and warming down helps provide relief. Muscle stretching and strengthening can help prevent injury but there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Tips for Golfers:

When you swing, rotate from your upper trunk. Anatomically, our lower back region was not designed for rotation. Forcing a structure to act beyond its natural moment is a recipe for injury.

Have regular spinal check-ups. Don’t wait to pop in for help when you are in pain. Prevention of injuries or addressing spinal issues before they manifest is better than trying to fix it. Once your injury is presented, a whole sequelae of inflammation, muscular imbalance, spinal or disc injuries, nerve irritation and etc has resulted. It is easier to manage your back in the early stages rather than a back that is yelling out of pain.

It is tempting to say “Give up golf, it is bad for you” but we all know that is not going to happen. Correct? If that’s the case, have your spine regularly checked so you can truly enjoy golf for what it is. Golf is not all that bad, it is an excellent sport for socializing, relaxing (for some, it can be frustrating and stressful), enjoying walking up and down the greens (get off that buggy and walk) and etc.

If you need more information how to treat Golf Sport Injuries, you may contact Spine Body Center at 021 2933 9295 or visit our website http://ift.tt/1KU81gJ

8 Food that Jakartans Can’t Live Without

Jakarta is brimming with food from around Indonesia, and there are some that Jakartans just can’t live without. Check out this list and if you agree to three or more, you might already be a true Jakartan!

1. Nasi Goreng

nasi-goreng

It’s not a new fact that Indonesians, like those from other Asian countries, just can’t live without rice. But for Jakartans especially, nothing beats the nasi goreng, a simple dish that closely resembles to the Asian fried rice, but usually mixed with the Indonesians most favorite sauce, the kecap manis. And there’s no fried rice like the ones you get from the kaki lima or the streets vendors. Some vendors are more special than others; we particularly love Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih, with slight middle-eastern influence of spice and chunks of goat meat, Nasi Goreng Bhakti, or the Nasi Goreng Gila, which you can request in most nasi goreng stalls. It consists of (usually) white rice white the stir-fried ingredients that would normally be mixed together with the rice, on top.

2. Sambal & Kerupuk

sambal-kerupuk

You will usually find one or these two things as a condiment in an Indonesian restaurant or kitchen. For sambal, the basic ingredient usually involves one or more kinds of chilies, shallots and shrimp paste ground in a pestle and mortar, and can be served raw or cooked. Indonesians also usually have a hard time eating without Kerupuk are deep fried crackers made from starch and other ingredients that serve as flavoring and can be eaten both as snack or to complement a dish.

3. Nasi Padang

Nasi_Padang

Padang food refers to the cuisine of the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, Indonesia and is famous for its rich taste of succulent coconut milk and spicy chili. Nasi Padang refers to steamed rice served with various choices of pre-cooked dishes. If you eat it in the restaurant, small serving of the entire dish the restaurant cook that day will be served at your table, and you can pick whatever you want and add it to your rice. Another great way to have it to go or ‘bungkus’, in which case you will be given a portion of rice good for two people, drizzled with coconut milk sauce, and ‘lauk’ or meat of your choice, vegetables, wrapped in banana leaf. This kind of serving is considered as one of the most loved comfort food for Indonesians. For some of the most authentic Padang Food around, go for Sari Bundo in Jl. Juanda, or the Pagi Sore restaurant located in several locations in Jakarta (Bendungan Hilir, Cipete).
