Jokowi’s Support on Dual Citizen Bill, Haze Enters Jakarta and Happy Halloween!

Dear Jakartans,

During one of his discussions with members of the Indonesian diaspora community in Washington D.C as part of his first official visit to the United States, Jokowi mentioned that he’ll support dual-citizenship bill, and he would like to push for the bill so that it can be resolved quickly, Tempo reports. Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L. P. Marsudi added that the government has been discussing the bill and that there was some progress made in August during a meeting of Indonesian diaspora in Jakarta, and that she thinks the diaspora communities abroad are huge potential for national development. President Joko Widodo decided to cut short his US trip as a forest fire crisis blazes out of control back home, which meant he did not attend the much-anticipated meetings with technology executives of Silicon Valley giants including Apple, Google and Microsoft.

The national weather agency, or BMKG, reported on Sunday that three-quarters of Indonesian territory was affected to varying degrees by the haze, including the capital Jakarta, with fires burning out of control across hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest in Sumatra and Kalimantan, as well as in the relatively untouched forests of Sulawesi and Papua, where the government has massive ambitions of clearing more space for farmland, the Jakarta Globe reports.  The only areas not affected by the haze as of Sunday, according to the BMKG, were Yogyakarta, Central Java, parts of East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, and the northern part of Papua.
