Where to Stay in Jakarta

Jakarta-1600x1200

One thing you will find is that Jakarta has endless selections of accommodations. From budget to 5 star hotels, local to international chain hotels, the numbers of rooms available for rent in the city adds on as more tourists, business and vacationers alike, flock on to the big city.

Although all areas have a balanced selection of budget to premium hotels, the first thing you need to know is where in Jakarta you will be staying. As Jakarta City is administratively divided into 4 areas, South, West, Center, North, and East, with most hotels located in South and Center, as also most business, government, and entertainment districts.

The Jakarta Pusat (Central Jakarta) area such as Menteng and Wahid Hasyim has long been the most popular among tourists, as it is close to many historic places and landmarks, and has some fairly walk friendly areas. For that reason, many good accommodations and good food can be easily found in this area. Here you can also find Jakarta’s backpacker area, Jalan Jaksa. But for leisurely stay, most expats like to stay around the Kemang area in the South, where more bars, pubs, cafes and western style restaurants can be easily found.

For your convenience, we roughly classify hotels into three big categories: budget, mid-range, and premium, which also obviously determine the price range.

Budget Hotels

If you are in a budget, we recommend sticking to one many 2 to 3 stars chain hotels that are scattered throughout the city, with price ranging 300 to 700 thousand/night, they are equipped with facilities that (although not always) include swimming pool, gym, internet access. They usually are also located in a moderately accessible and convenient location.

In Kemang area, there have recently been more budget hotels crowding the area such as: Favehotel Kemang and Pop! Hotel. While in Blok M area there is NEO hotel, located smack dab in one of the busiest junction in the area, and Oak Tree Hotel, located in a slightly less busy area of Jl. Sampit, Kebayoran Baru (near Ayodya Park).

In city center, you can never go wrong picking one of the many hotels in Wahid Hasyim area including Favehotel, Ibis Hotel, Max One Sabang, or the artsy Artotel in Thamrin.

Mid-range Hotels

With the high number of business travelers in Jakarta, this category offers the most options of hotels; from chic independent boutique hotels, to big chain hotel brands, there are literally hundreds of hotels within the mid-range classification. With 3 to 4 stars hotels, the price roughly range from 800 to Rp. 2 million a night (depends on season). Hotels usually would throw in good deals every now and then to attract customers, and this is something we encourage you to check before making any bookings. You just never know what kind of promotions the next door hotel has got in store for you.

Favorite names in this category includes Alila (both in Kemang and Pecenongan Jakarta), Kristal Hotel (Terogong, South Jakarta), Park Lane Jakarta (Kuningan Area), and Pullman (Bunderan HI). For those in the look for hotels with more unique individuality and contemporary design, Morissey and Kosenda hotel has some of the most original looking hotel in the city.

Other reliable names we recommend are: Double Tree by Hilton, Ascott Jakarta, and Aston Hotels.

Those looking for top of the line comfort will be spoiled with the selection luxury accommodations offered in Jakarta. The city is brimming with stylish retreats that will make you forget that you are in one of the busiest and noisiest cities in Asia. Most of World’s top names in 5 star hospitality has marked a spot in Jakarta; and all with a bang too. The Ritz Carlton has two hotels just minutes away from each other. What’s even better is that many of these plush hotels are connected to the premium malls too so you don’t need to stretch far to try one of Jakarta’s favourite past time: window shopping.

In central Jakarta, nothing beats a stay around the Hotel Indonesia roundabout; the historic Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Grand Hyatt, Raffles Jakarta, or Keraton at the Plaza. The Ritz Carlton has two locations to offer, one in the Kuningan CBD area and another in Pacific Place in Sudirman CBD area, both prime business and shopping districts. In the old neighbourhood of Menteng area, The Hermitage offers a step back to old time colonial with its modern-classic architecture.

In South Jakarta, Fairmont and Mulia Hotel are competing to steal luxury traveler’s heart that want to stay close to Senayan area. We also recommend checking out The Dharmawangsa Hotel, located in one of the lushest and greenest area in Jakarta, and Gran Mahakam in the vibrant Melawai area.
