Dear Jakartans,
This Thursday, Muslims around the world will celebrate the “Eid al-Adha” day to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son, as an act of submission to God’s command. In this day, affluent Muslims who can afford to sacrifice domestic animals such as cows and goats to be shared to their family, relatives, and most importantly to the poor and needy. While, for some, the festival’s rituals can seem a little barbaric it’s a chance to learn more about the fascinating and deep-rooted culture within our community.
After being postponed for more than 20 years with a series of obstacles and impediments, Jakarta’s long awaited Mass Rapid Transport is definitely in full swing as it entered the next crucial phase of underground drilling with President Joko Widodo launched the first tunnel drilling machine on Monday. The machine will be operated to build the track that will run from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Hotel Indonesia roundabout in Central Jakarta. It will comprise of seven elevated stations and six underground stations. The Senayan-Setiabudi tunnel would be built by another machine, set to be launched next month.
Following the Trade Ministry’s announcement to loosen up liquor regulation as part of the economic stimulus package issued by the government on Sept. 9, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has said that his administration is ready to use existing city regulations on liquor distribution as soon as the Trade Ministry issues a new regulation allowing it to do so. Under the city bylaw, liquor with alcohol content of 5 percent and lower is categorized into Group A of alcoholic beverages that may be sold at minimarkets, supermarkets and hypermarkets. “There should be a bottle shop selling alcoholic drinks only. It’s common in other countries. Anyone can buy from the bottle shop as long as they are over 21 years old,” Ahok told reporters at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.
