Uber Petition, Sumatra’s State of Emergency & 2015 Oktoberfest

Dear Jakartans,

Last Saturday, the Directorate of Traffic Polda Metro Jaya and Jakarta Transportation Agency (DISHUB) created a task force to target drivers of Uber, the highly popular rider-sharing service. Although no drivers have been apprehended and no cars have been seized, Uber has swiftly campaigned for support among its Indonesian users and released a petition addressing Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil. With a goal of getting 25,000 signatures, it has drawn more than 24,000 signatures since it went up on Saturday. Uber has faced stern opposition from licensed taxi operators, regulators and the police, all of whom argue that the online service is not compliant with prevailing public transportation regulations.

On Monday, Indonesia declared a state of emergency in Sumatera as the Air Pollutant Index in the region reached 984, or far higher than the ‘emergency’ level. The Indonesian government said it will send more than 1,000 troops to fight fires in southern Sumatra, as smoke makes thousands sick, delays flights and pushes air quality to unhealthy levels in neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia. South Sumatra, one of the main centres of the fires, has alone reported 22,585 cases of acute respiratory tract infections since Friday.

October is just around the corner and we can’t wait to party like the Germans with Oktoberfest! Kick off with the oldest Bavarian-style party in the city, Aryaduta’s Oktoberfest on 17 & 18 September 2015, and later with Lippo Mall’s Oktoberfest on September 19th. In case you miss them, Indonesia’s only microbrewery Paulaner in Kempinski Jakarta is giving away 2 tickets for 2 persons for their massive Oktoberfest celebration from 7 to 10 October 2015.
