This Week’s News Updates and Oktoberfest 2015

The Jakarta administration plans to issue a regulation encouraging the use of more LED-lit billboards, in a bid to make the capital look more like Tokyo or Hong Kong. Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said last week that he hoped to persuade building managers and owners to plaster their properties with billboards, with the inducement of a waiver on the outdoor advertising tax. In exchange, though, the city administration will ask for a 30 percent of the profit generated by the advertising. He said he hoped the new scheme would transform Jakarta’s skyline to rival the neon-lit cities of Tokyo or Hong Kong.

The haze caused by the Sumatera fire continues to choke as the The Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) reached a hazardous level on Saturday in several cities, including in Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan, Pontianak in West Kalimantan and in Riau’s cities of Pekanbaru, Kampar, Bengkalis, and neighbouring countries of Malaysia and Singapore, where anger is rising as a thick haze engulfs the city-state, causing schools to be shut down. Land and forest fires are expected to continue until the end of November if preventive measures are not taken. The dry weather, limited supply of water and equipment, as well as the vast areas that have caught fire remain the main challenges for emergency personnel fighting the blazes.
