WNJ: Dr. Fong, can you give us brief introduction about yourself?
Dr. Fong: I am from Sydney, Australia. I’ve been practicing as a chiropractor since 1996 and I have a great interest in non-surgical intervention of scoliosis, disc injuries and other spine-related conditions. In Australia, I was an anatomy and physiology lecturer and had been active in giving seminars for over a decade.

WNJ: What types of conditions do you see?
Dr. Fong: We see many different types of musculoskeletal conditions and quite a large number of challenging cases are referred to us . Because of our conservative approach, we work closely and co-manage our care with other specialists and practitioners as well. Patients that walk through our doors present with back pain, “slipped disc”, scoliosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, personal/work-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, stroke, children with special needs and etc.

WNJ: What makes you interested in teaching anatomy?
Answer: Actually, my lecturer (eventually became my godfather) directed me to teach. I was strongly influenced by my godfather and I was awed by the magnificence of how amazing the human body worked. Since then, I was hooked on both anatomy and our coffee breaks. My godfather would mentor me during his breaks on differential diagnosis.

WNJ: What makes you decide Jakarta to be the place where you have your own clinic?
Dr. Fong: I used to visit Jakarta quite frequently as my wife’s family is from Indonesia and Singapore. The more I visited here, the more I fell in love with this place.

When I was in Australia, a lot of my patients were from abroad. Years later, I moved to Singapore and realised a lot of my patients were from Indonesia. They were flying to Singapore to seek treatment. The problem is, treatment does take time and short trips abroad are not conducive to seeing any real progress. Consistency is the key to any kind of treatment. That was one of the greatest reasons for me moving to Indonesia so I can provide care that was uninterrupted, for more sustainable results.

WNJ: How long have you been here in Jakarta? And what do you think about the city?
Dr. Fong: I have been here for a few years now. I like this city for its cosmopolitanism. I enjoy the coffee, food and the people here. Especially the people of Jakarta. I am impressed with how courteous and generous the locals are. This city itself is vibrant and it gives a sense of possibilites.

WNJ: What makes your clinic different from others in Jakarta?
Dr. Fong: Our centre is a multi-disciplinary that caters to many different types of patients with various type of conditions. We are a one-stop shop that serves not only our own patients but patients referred to us from other medical, chiropractic, physiotherapy centers.

Scoliosis and disc problems (commonly known as “slipped disc”) are very complex conditions. It is not a simple “let’s crack your back and you’ll be fixed” kind of pathology. One has to firstly ascertain the cause, nature, behaviour and associated sequela that arises from these issues and carefully manage this.

No one treatment is a solution. As such, we have established a centre that has chiropractic, physiotherapy, scoliosis management (using SpineCor® (UK) scoliosis bracing procedures), non-surgical spine and disc Decompression Therapy and Occupational Therapy

In 2013, we were the first centre in Indonesia to provide scoliosis management with both UK certified SpineCor® scoliosis bracing consultants and SpineCor® scoliosis physiotherapists.

WNJ: Working with so many people, how do you manage to get along with them? Especially now you are working with Indonesian people?
Dr. Fong: They all great. All my staff are quite proficient in English and thank goodness for that considering my Bahasa Indonesian is absolutely atrocious. We have translators working full-time as well. Our staff are extremely dedicated, passionate about their patients and they take a lot of pride in their work. We are very blessed that all our staff have initiative to learn and enhance their knowledge for the betterment of our health care services.

WNJ: What is your passion?
Dr. Fong: I really enjoy teaching. I train our staff weekly and even therapists/practitioners of other centers as well. This helps me overcome my withdrawal symptoms from not teaching full-time anymore. My true passion is to educate.

WNJ: What is your hobby?
Dr. Fong: My hobby is photography. My father used to have those classical cameras and my eldest brother loved taking photos. My hobby started when my mum bought me my first Nikon film camera. I am a hardcore Nikon fan. I should get corporate sponsorship for saying this! No offense to your Canon, Sony, Pentax readers. I have tried other systems but muscle memory prevented me from switching allegiance.

For awhile, I stopped photography then my wife’s uncle re-ignited my passion again. Nowadays I am using those vintage manual lenses and this brings back all those great memories of yesteryears. This helps to slow you down, wait for the right moment and take that decisive shot. Then you pray to the Lord that the photo was in focus. Haha.

WNJ: What is your favorite food?
Dr. Fong: I love nasi padang and especially Indian food.

WNJ: We read about your family background in martial arts. Can you tell us more about it?
Dr.Fong: Yes, my whole family does martial arts. Both male and female. My mum is a tai chi practitioner, all my brothers and sister have various Shaolin training and etc. My family tradition is that every child of every generation MUST learn martial arts. The greatest thing about kung fu is that you can apply it into everything that you do. The word “Kung Fu” means achievement through hardwork. It is also great for chiropractic. It helps with coordination, controlled pressure and speed. This can be incorporated into adjusting techniques.

WNJ: Thank you so much for your time Dr. Fong, really have an inspirational interview and we hope for your success always!
Dr.Fong: You are most welcome, It has been a great pleasure.
