Trial of Odd Even System Starts Today

Dear Jakartans!

The Jakarta administration has started its one-month long trial of the ‘odd-even’ road closure today. This new regulation requires cars to take turns entering the city’s main roads on alternate days according to the number on their licensed plates. Cars with odd-numbered licensed plates are allowed on the roads on odd-numbered dates during the month, and cars with even-numbered plates on even-numbered dates. The restriction applies on Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Thamrin and Jalan Gatot Subroto from Mondays to Fridays, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. How did it affect your commute today? Do you think this system will work in the long run? Leave a comment here!

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) says higher intensity rain is expected to hit Jakarta and surrounding cities in August, creating the threat of serious flooding in the capital. Downpours in Jakarta next month could measure between 200 and 300 millimeters a day, compared to between 100 and 150 millimeters in June. He said flooding and landslides could occur in certain areas of the city, particularly in South Jakarta, West Jakarta and South Tangerang, as said by BMKG spokesman Harry Tirto to The Jakarta Post, Monday.
