Eat Like a Local: Best Sate in Jakarta

Who doesn’t like Sate? Probably one of the ultimate Indonesian food that’s popular even abroad. Every region in Indonesian seems to have some kind of version of this grilled meat on a stick. Here is a list of our favourite sate spots in Jakarta:

Sambas refers to the street near Melawai, South Jakarta, where multiple sate carts offer sate ayam and sate kambing. You can’t go wrong with any of the sellers, but the most popular is Pak Rofii’is stand. You can also try the latest ‘trend’ of diet sate, where chicken breast cuts are served pale, with a little squirt of lime and some sambal, sans peanut sauce and kecap manis.

A sate stall in front of RSPP (Pertamina Hospital) in Kyai Maja street, South Jakarta, popular for its Sate Kambing with lontong. It is located in front of a bakmi yamin place that serves some Indo-chinese food. This sate place can get really crowded and the busy street makes car-parking here a slight task.

We are not sure how, but the Sate Kambing in this place is incredibly tender with no trace of gaminess at all that it takes a minute to register that you are in fact eating goat’s meat. Other than the sate, their clear broth Sop Kambing and flavorful Gule Kambing is awesome too, all served with unique condiment of cabbage & cucumber acar (light pickle).

Batibul stands for ‘Bawah Tiga Bulan’ or under three months, refering to the age of the goat used as the sate. The result, more tender meat and no trace of the gamy smell that’s usually found with grilled goat’s meat. Must try.

7. Sate Ajo Ramon

We hesitated a bit with putting a Padang style sate in the list, as its completely different way of serving sate and cooking method deserves a category of its own. But anyone that loves sate must put this one in their places to go. Ajo Ramon’s yellow sate sauce is second to none, flavorful and complements the tender skewered beef cuts really well. If you’re not squeamish, we urge you to opt for the beef tongue sate. Delish!

Jl. Cipaku I (Pasar Santa) & Jl. Cikajang Raya No.72, South Jakarta

Phone: 0852-1337-1999

Sate Buntel is a signature dish of Solo, central Java made of minced and seasoned young goat meat and wrapped in a fatty blanket (fat layer on goat’s belly) to form a round cylindrical shape, hence the name, meaning fat or round. TIt is rich in flavour and the fat literally melts in your mouth. The grilled Sate Buntel is best eaten with simply sweet soya sauce, shallot and chilli padi condiment.
