Taxi Driver Protests Turned Violent, Brussel Bombing & Our Weekly Quiz

Dear Jakartans!

Jakartans were enraged by the massive anti-Uber protest done by thousands of taxi drivers that crippled main Jakarta streets for hours and, most horrifically, turned brutally violent after a portion of protestors forced fellow drivers still operating taxis and buses to stop. Some protestors also became involved in skirmishes with riders of popular motorcycle taxi service Gojek, Jakarta Globe reports.

On Monday, the Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop opened the new Australian Embassy complex in Patra Kuningan, South Jakarta, making it the largest embassy ever constructed by the country, with a total floor space of 50,000 square meters. The complex includes a five-story Chancery, accommodation for some embassy staff, and recreation and medical centers. To add, the Indonesia-Australia relationship recently has entered a new chapter as Indonesia officially announced Australia as one of the 169 countries granted visa-free visits to Indonesia, effective this month.

From around the world, we mourn as violence still fills the headlines; Belgium’s capital was shook by multiple bombings, two in Zavantem Airport and one in Maelbeek metro station near EU buildings yesterday (22/3) that killed at least  31 people and injured more than 220. Just days before, a suicide bomb attack also shook Istanbul (Saturday, 19/3) killing five and injured 29. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for all these attacks.
