Here are a number or events that you shouldn’t miss when in Jakarta!
1. Chinese New Year Celebration, 28 January 2017
Just like Christmas time and Lebaran, around this time of year shopping malls decorate themselves with lanterns, red and gold to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. But for a more authentic feel, head to ‘kota’ (old city center) or Glodok area that’s considered the unofficial chinatown of Jakarta, where many Kong Hu Chu (Confucianism) temples are located. Blend with the locals as they celebrate this most important year in the Chinese calendar with Lion Dance, and other performances.
2. Cap Go Meh Celebration – February 2017
This day is to welcome the 15th day of the first month of the Lunar Calendar that is celebrated as merry as the new year by Chinese Indonesians. The festivities, most celebrated in Glodok ‘china town’, Cap Go Meh usually involve a parade for Toapekong (a Chinese deity), liong (dragon dances), barongsai.
3. Java Jazz Festival, 3-5 March 2017
Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival (JJF) is the largest jazz festivals in Indonesia and also in Asia, although from year to year the music has attracted different genres of musicians. Held every early March, you can see dozens of performances by local and international artists in the span of three-days. This year, Sergio Mendez, Chick Corea, Arturo Sandoval are confirmed to perform.
4. Inacraft, April 2017
The biggest Indonesian handicraft exhibition in Indonesia. This is where you get to see and interact with hundreds of local producers of high quality craft from all over Indonesia. From clothing, gifts, furniture, housewares, etc. As competition between exhibitors that sell their product can be high, the price is usually quite competitive.
5. Jakarta Fair, (Pekan Raya Jakarta) June – July 2017
is a fair held annually in Jakarta International Expo (JIE) Kemayoran, Jakarta, Indonesia, in June and July. It features exhibitions, trade promotions, shopping, music performances, various shows, amusement rides and a food festival. The fair is meant to celebrate the anniversary of Jakarta, centered in the Pekan Raya Jakarta ground in Kemayoran, North Jakarta. This is also where you get to see the traditional Jakarta food ‘kerak telor’ sellers on the perimeter of the venue!
6. Indonesian Independence Celebration, August 17, 2017
On the 17th of August, Indonesia celebrates its independence from the Dutch. For this occasion, Indonesians have a series of activities traditionally done during the celebration such as the ‘Panjat Pinang’, which remains to be the most iconic symbol of Hari Kemerdekaan or Independence Day, and other traditional games such as the sack race, etc.
7. Mandiri Jakarta Marathon, October 2017
The Mandiri Jakarta Marathon 2016 is the biggest running event in Indonesia.The Jakarta Marathon usually have 5 categories: The Full Marathon, the Half Marathon (21KM), 10K, 5K and 1.3Km (Childrens’ Sprint), starting from the national monument (Monas). 8. Jakarta Fashion Week, October 2017
Jakarta’s and one of Indonesia’s biggest fashion event of the year. This is where Indonesia’s leading designers showcase their design in the event. Many of them will present collections inspired by the country’s rich heritage in different types of traditional fabrics while simultaneously keep their eyes on the present and future. Although all shows are invites only, you will still get to feel the atmosphere as many fringe events will be held all across town.
9. The Djakarta Warehouse Project, December 2017
Since its first event in 2009, The Djakarta Warehouse Project has rapidly grown from a one-day event to a thriving, two-day gathering that played host to about 70,000 party people from Jakarta and Asia. This further cements Jakarta’s position as one of Asia’s major party cities. It not only the biggest dance music festivals in Indonesia, but also Asia’s, attracting some of the best DJs in the world to one place.
