AccorHotels Sustainable Director, Arnaud Herrmann, stated, “A year after our Planet 21 program was extended, I’d like to praise the exceptional way our hotels rallied behind it in 2016. Last year is proof that our “Acting Here” commitment is a reality. The teams knew they could make things happen, and supported local initiatives with high value impact for our guests, communities and partners. Whether it was to fight food waste, promote agroforestry or further the energy transition, we applied a “test and learn” approach and tried out new, intelligent tools which have helped us make faster progress towards our objectives.”
Over 500 urban vegetable gardens
AccorHotels, which is present in 1,700 cities worldwide, has committed to developing urban farming and to planting 1,000 vegetable gardens by 2020. Though just a few months have passed since this commitment was announced, over 500 vegetable gardens have already been planted worldwide, from Bangkok to Rome and Sao Paulo to Kinshasa. In Asia Pacific, more than 140 AccorHotels have already installed urban vegetable gardens, including in Indonesia.
For example, in Fairmont Jakarta, culinary team plants herbs for cooking, marinating, crust topping and also garnishing. The homegrown herbs include mint, rosemary, lavender and thyme. Mercure Bali Sanur Resort also plants fruits and vegetables at their own garden, such as tomatoes, eggplants, mushroom as well as herbs and spices. The garden serves as green education area for guests pertaining the environment protection program.
Less food waste
38 hotels in 13 countries are already using connected solutions to fight food waste in their kitchens and restaurants. The initiative has cut food waste by nearly 60% in the pilot hotels’ kitchens. That’s a total of IDR 7 billion in estimated savings.
Since 2016, AccorHotels in Greater Jakarta and Tangerang has affirmed their collaborations with Emmanuel Foundation by supporting “Food Rescue” program. Regularly they take perishable and prepared food from the hotels, handle hygienically, then distribute the food for malnourish communities. By the end of 2016, there are 11 AccorHotels participated actively and produced 6,206 kg of food to support more 31.627 families in 16 kampongs in Jakarta and surrounding.
Aiming for carbon neutral buildings
One of Planet 21’s key priorities is to achieve carbon neutral buildings. In 2016, the Group cut its energy consumption by 2.4% and CO² emissions by 3%. These results are even more encouraging because they were achieved despite particularly unfavorable world weather conditions in 2016 compared with 2015 since demand for heating and air-conditioning increased more than 4%. In Asia Pacific, some hotels are using air–conditioning with frictionless chillers with magnetic bearing compressor technology.
“Green Stars”: guests to elect the “greenest” hotel
This year, the AccorHotels establishments’ annual Earth Day event, “Planet 21 Day”, will see exceptional mobilization around the theme of food & beverage. The hotels are invited to highlight their greatest achievements in three categories: the fight against food waste, the creation of an urban vegetable garden and the offer of healthy, local food and drink. The winners will be selected by a vote on social networks. For the first time, guests and internet users will be able to elect the “greenest” hotel.
Key figures for 2016
A year ago, AccorHotels unveiled its new, ambitious CSR commitments for 2020. The Group’s sustainable development program, Planet 21, focuses on four fields of action, namely employees, guests, partners and local communities, as well as two priority issues: food and sustainable buildings.
AccorHotels in Jakarta and Tangerang “Acting Here” with Disables
Focusing on one of 4 major action areas of Planet 21, the community, this year AccorHotels in Jakarta and Tangerang region held an “Acting Here” event involving 60 children with disabilities from the State lementary School for Disabilities 01 Lebak Bulus, Jakarta. The program aims to provide support and motivation to children with disabilities to encourage them to work in the hospitality industry. Motivation classes are organized, with successful disabled employees from Fairmont Jakarta. Lastly they had preliminary trainings such as practicing in decorative towels folding, cooking classes and table settings.

We hope with the trainings, sharing and the presence of AccorHotels team will encourage the children with disabilities to advance and continuously have the motivation to support their career development in the hospitality industry.”
On the same occasion, the Emmanuel Foundation, the hotel partner in the “Food Rescue” program also presented positive results gathered from their initiatives with AccorHotels since 2016.
