One foodie phenomena that has taken Jakarta food scene by storm is the weekend brunch craze. What’s not to love about brunch? After a long and boozy night, who wants to rise early for breakfast? A weekend brunch is the perfect reason to buy some time on the weekend, round up your friends, and indulge on your favourite comfort food over a perfectly brewed cup of coffee.
Cacaoté has always been well known for its selection of scrumptious desserts, artisanal chocolate, pastries and perfectly crafted coffees. Every time you walk in to its Senopati restaurant, it always feels like stepping into Marie Antoinette’s tea room, where she would pick her favorite French cakes and drink her exotic teas, and you’d instantly crave for something sweet.
Little did I know that they serve one hell of a brunch menu too; to serve the growing brunch crowd, Cacaoté serves a good selection of brunch classics that would seriously make your mouth waters.
That morning, my brunch companion ordered for the American classic buttermilk fried chicken, this dish with the humble origins of southern American comfort food, and a crowd’s favorite for a no-nonsense meal. As I look around the room I noticed a few tables also order the same thing, indicating its popularity. I had wrongly thought how fried chicken would have nothing new to offer. Served with a little bowl of salad and chips, the burger towers high and shows a sizable piece of breaded chicken breast, topped with slaw and peanut sauce. This combination is quaint and had me wondering. I wanted to try and took a bite to the crunchy outer texture chicken, sweet, tangy and nutty slaw, sandwiched between soft white burger buns.
For myself, I opted for the classic Big Breakfast, because I feel like sampling everything from A to Z. The alphabet here starts from a choice of chicken or beef sausage, turkey ham or beef pastrami or house-cured salmon, parsley potato, sautéed mushroom, and two eggs in any style you like (I chose sunny side up). This breakfast menu, I also think, would tell a lot about a place’s quality of ingredients. I’d usually go for salmon, but this time I was curious of the beef pastrami. My eggs came perfectly cooked, and were sitting on top of a slice of nicely toasted home-made wheat bread, topped with a scant of arugula salad, perfect to add a vegetable touch for my carb and protein loaded breakfast!
The food was definitely enough for the hungriest and the most hungover, but we couldn’t help but try another of their tempting menu, and ordered for the Truffled Scrambled Egg, a fancy rendition of ‘egg on toast’ that uses truffle oil and shredded Parmesan cheese on top of silky and perfectly cooked scrambled egg and some arugula leaves on toasted sourdough bread.
Some people like it salty and some like their breakfast sweet. Because we’re in a place known for its dessert, why skip the dessert? The sweet tooth will rejoice at Cacaoté’s selection of sweet breakfast menu. The Granola puts a richer and desserty twist to the classic granola and fruit mix, by serving a good serving of mascarpone mix, topped with fresh berries compote, granola, toasted coconut, almonds, and fresh fruit.
Other classics include the Ricotta pancake, a fluffy pancake mixed with ricotta cheese, topped with charred banana, butterscotch, and vanilla ice cream; or the tropical twist of the classic Brioche French Toast, crusted with cornflakes and served with roasted pineapple, and coconut ice cream. A tropical paradise’ breakfast!
Cacaoté’s weekend brunch menu is served from 11am to 5 pm, price ranges from Rp. 70,000 to Rp. 110,000 (before tax & services).
