It was a fantastic weekend for trail running in Indonesia as MesaStila Challenge Ultra, one of four races on the calendar of the Asia Trail Master series, saw the confirmation of two local heroes on the international scene. Arief Wismoyono (male) and Mila Marlina (female) both won the most challenging 100k race and they were entitled for the lead in the 2015 Asia Trail Master ranking with four races remaining to go.
The event was professionally hosted by MesaStila Resort and Spa in Desa Losari, Magelang, Central Java, a region, which is well known for the UNESCO Buddhist temple site, Borobudur. The tracks and trail courses for the various 5 (five) races category, all offering different distances and unique challenges , proved to be breathtakingly beautiful and left an impression on many trail runners, who spoke of a “hidden gem” . The courses were characterised by volcanoes and mountain climbs, bamboo forests, traditional villages and jungle trails, to finally end at the coffee plantation of MesaStila.
The 100k ultra race category has a total gain elevation of 7700 meters, and even for experienced local climbers such as Alan Maulana this can sometimes be considered as “too much”. Maulana led the race at the first 65k point, but began to feel unwell and had to stop racing. It left the door open for Wismoyono to assume control, although he had to cope with an impressive final charge forward from Dzaki Wardana, the runner up. Wismoyono, the first Indonesian champion of Mount Rinjani Ultra (last August 2015), finished the 100k race at midnight and within a time frame of a total of 19 hours. The podium was completed with Pramonosidi Wijanarko as third place, who himself won second place in the gruelling Gede Pangrango Marathon (last May 2015).
Looking ahead, Wismoyono held an advantage of 90 points in the Asia Trail Master ranking over China’s Xie Zhangrong, with India’s Ullas Narayana, Wijanarko and Yan Longfei, amongst others, within striking range. Points-scoring races are still coming up in China, Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia.
Mila Marlina has no real competition of such long distances in her native country, but in order to become the 2015 Asia Trail Master champion, she still will have to face a stern challenge brought by Malaysia’s Tan Seow Ping. The points differential count between the two was only 42 points.
The 5th year annual trail run and ultra run challenge at MesaStila, brought this year a total of185 runners together, coming from various countries such as Indonesia, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Japan and other Asian countries. The race seemed to be a gathering for International trail runners especially with the presence of Kang Hendra Wijaya, Aki Niaki and Sri Budi Agus of MesaStila, acting both as consultants and race directors. The event started on October 10, 2015 at 5.00 a.m. for the 100k participants, followed at 10.00 p.m. by 65k race participants. The next day, October 11, 2015 at 5.00 a.m. the 42k race participants started, then shortly followed by all other remaining runners at 7.00 a.m for both the 21K and 13K race. The latters both started from the heritage Ambarawa train station.
The winners announcement event was opened and attended by representative from the Ministry of Tourism Indonesia, Mr. Tazbir , as the Assistant Deputy of Business Market Segment and Government Development, as well as Mr. Prasetyo Ariwibowo , as the Head of Central Java Culture and Tourism Government.
At the event, MesaStila gave numerous symbolic donations to the school for autism children such as Bina Anggita in Magelang.
