This week marks one year of President Joko Widodo & Vice President Jusuf Kalla’s time in office, and Indonesians apparently has mixed feelings about his leadership. A survey conducted by Indo Barometer shows public satisfaction with Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kala has fallen to 46 percent in September, from 57 percent last March. The biggest disappointments regard several issues on which he had strongly campaigned on, such as fighting rampant corruption, and boosting the economy.
Widodo is reportedly going to make his inaugural official United States visit, in which he is scheduled to visit Silicon Valley from 25 to 29 October to meet CEOs of tech giants Google, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft to focus on technology investment and Indonesia’s internet penetration.
Indonesia’s lawmakers are planning to start drafting new law that would address the rapid growth of smartphone-based transportation apps, according to a government official, Jakarta Globe reports. The new law would regulate the increasingly popular services, which otherwise fall into a grey area in Indonesia’s existing transport regulations. The apps in focus are the Indonesian-made Gojek, Malaysian-based GrabTaxi and the popular ride sharing app Uber that in short time have become increasingly indispensable among Jakarta’s commuters’ every day struggle against traffic. Despite their apparent success, the ride has not been smooth for these companies as their unconventional business models continue to face scrutiny from traditional cab operators and law enforcement officials..
