Hello Jakartans!
August is a very special month for Indonesia, as many of us are gearing up towards the commemoration of our Independence Day. In Jakarta, the local administration marks the month with the introduction of Bulan Patuh Trotoar (Orderly Sidewalk Month) to discipline vendors and motorists who encroach on sidewalks, to ensure comfort for pedestrians. The program is in response to complaints by pedestrians that it was uncomfortable and unsafe to walk on the city’s 400 kilometers of sidewalks occupied by vendors and motorists, The Jakarta Post reports. Let’s just hope that the program is met with stern law enforcement!
This month is also an exciting one packed with great art and music events and festivals that are hard to miss; from the upcoming mega music festival We The Fest, Pop Con Asia, mega EDM festival Pacha Festival in Bali, a major contemporary art exhibition, Art Stage Jakarta, to a pre-opening sneak peek of what’s going to be one of Asia’s biggest art museum, MACAN Museum. Read about it all in this article and be inspired.
Speaking of freedom of expression, the Indonesian government will reopen access to the website version of encrypted messaging service, Telegram, this week, following a visit from Telegram chief executive Pavel Durov in Jakarta yesterday. Access to the website was closed last month following a request from the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) that listed it as the main platform for terrorists spreading radical propaganda, The Jakarta Globe reports.
