Hello Jakartans!
Tomorrow, Seventeenth of August, Indonesians will be celebrating its 72nd anniversary. Free from colonialism, free to shape our fate as cultured nation, free to speak our minds, free to enjoy liberty and justice for all. Wait, justice for all? Its true that we are living in a free country, but it is safe to say that our country still holds people behind bars that are wrongly persecuted and the word “justice for all” still only serves the privileged few.
Case in point? How about that guy who planted marijuana to treat his wife who is suffering from a unique disease? The blood test came out negative and it was proven that he did it for the treatment of his wife only, but still, he serves prison sentence, and the wife passed away while he was facing trials. Can’t even begin to imagine how he felt. Our backwards and outdated drugs law should be revised and updated, not only to protect those who use certain substance for treatments, but also to protect users, because drug addiction is not be a criminal case, but a health problem. How about the dealers? Now that, the government can eradicate and hunt like dogs. But it is high time to think forward on how we deal with our so-called ‘war on drugs’ because it is proven to not be effective. The overflowing of prisons and a lot of individuals shouldn’t have ended up in prison, but in the hands of health care specialists. Look at Portugal, they changed their perspective on the war on drugs and over the years the country has seen more than 75% decrease of addiction problems. But then again, I think Indonesia still has a long way to come in terms of modern drug laws. One can still hope though.

All in all, we would like to congratulate Indonesia for its 72nd anniversary! A lot of good things are happening, and staying positive seems to be the only way forward, so let’s do it for the glory of Red and White (not the liquor store, mind you)……
