Plans for Jakarta-Surabaya High Speed Train & Jakarta Toll Increase

Dear Jakartans!

Indonesia has invited Japan to submit proposals to work on a railway line connecting Jakarta to its second-biggest city Surabaya, The Jakarta Globe reports. The project aims to slash journey times by more than half to around five hours on the roughly 600-kilometer route. Japan has been one of Indonesia’s biggest investors, but was dealt a blow last year when the Southeast Asian country awarded China a high-speed train project linking the capital with the city of Bandung.

Toll price hike to come: The Sedyatmo toll roads linking the Jakarta and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport are slated to increase by 7 to 16 percent, starting at midnight on Thursday. Following suit in the near future is a toll increase for the busy Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, which connects the capital city and Bekasi and Karawang. The planned toll increases for two of Greater Jakarta’s major routes come despite user complaints about the road quality of thoroughfares in the capital city, which is hub to many economic activities, The Jakarta Post reports.
