Dear Jakartans!
President Jokowi has called tomorrow (April 19) as a public holiday in the capital to allow residents to vote in the second round of the gubernatorial election as Jakarta voters will once again head to the polls tomorrow for the second round of the election. Surveys have shown the race tightening between incumbent Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese Christian, closing in on rival Anies Baswedan, a former education minister, that both didn’t manage to secure more than 50% vote in the first round.
The government is looking into the idea of moving the capital city from Jakarta to a new location, preferably outside Java, the head National Development Planning Agency, or Bappenas, Bambang Brodjonegoro said last week. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has addressed his request to the agency for a feasibility study on moving the country’s capital as the city has grown too overcrowded, The Jakarta Globe reports.
Although the study is yet to conclude this year, it is said that Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan was one of the options. Do you think Indonesia should move its capital somewhere else? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
And for the wonderful women out there, let’s celebrate the empowerment of Indonesian women this coming Kartini’s Day on 21st of April 2017. Be the modern Kartini, and stay strong and independent!
