Padang cuisine is probably one of the most popular Indonesian food in the world. It is originated from West Sumatra and known for its strong flavor and heavy use of spices. Traditionally, it also has a unique way of serving; small portions of different dishes are stacked . to be enjoyed with rice right on your table. Padang food is also a favorite because the price is usually pocket-friendly and best to be enjoyed in a small group.
Tourist can now easily access a unique Padang food when traveling in Jakarta’s historic part of town. Representing Indonesian culinary, Padang Merdeka opened its first restaurant in Kota Tua, an old city area in Jakarta that packed with daily visitors. Yes, finally a great addition to restaurants and cafes around the area!
Different from other Padang restaurant in town however, Padang Merdeka brings a unique concept with a more modern twist and theme. The contemporary design resonates into Jakartans’ daily life, which is creative, modern, and multicultural.
Owner of Padang Merdeka Dandy Wijaya said in a statement, “As a nation, we Indonesia would like to highlight the cultural and patriotic feel that are increasingly fading in the modern era and was one of the reasons for the present Padang Merdeka to commemorate the patriotism and the Indonesian culture of interior and exterior design.”
Upon entering the restaurant, the cultural nuances of Indonesia are very thick, with a patterned map of Indonesia on the ceiling and also Toraja batik pattern that adorns the pillars of the building. As a favorite selfie spot, there is this big wall with mural figures of national heroes. These highlights are created by local talents from HIGHERPURPOSE Studio and Satu Arsitek. Apparently, all furniture and materials inside the buildings are also locally made.
Surprisingly, the foods are cheap, starting from IDR 18,000 per portion only, and super delicious! The restaurant adjusts the price accordingly to suit the target market, which is basically customers from all classes. Some of the main food at Padang Merdeka include the humble Ayam Goreng (fried chicken) cooked by the chefs of authentic Padang origin. T
here is also a unique menu you have to try; Ayam Pop (chicken cooked in oil, served with coconut milk. Of course, visitors will able to taste other signature Padang dishes such as gulai (curry), green chili chicken, dendeng (crispy beef jerky), and stir fried cassava leaf.
Padang Merdeka is open from 9:30 AM to midnight. Despite located in the ever-crowded Kota Tua area, visitors don’t have to worry about parking; they have enough space with good security inside the building. For seat capacity, Padang Merdeka is able to accommodate up to 140 persons divided into two rooms, the smoking room and non-smoking room.
Enjoying Padang cuisine at Padang Merdeka is going to be an entirely new experience for expats and tourists, and even for Indonesians. It is something you don’t want to miss while in town!
