GOLFaholics…is golf good for you? What you are about to read may either enlighten or anger you. Read for more information… Golfers are dedicated with an enormous amount of loyalty and tenacity. Waking up at 3am in the morning to get the golf course far away just to get that first swing. I only know of photographers who are just as fanatical trying to capture that golden hour. Rain or shine, you are out there. Admit it, golf is addictive. The pursuit to getting that perfect hit. Trying to replicate that smooth sailing projectile flying through the air and landing ever so close to an almost hole-in-one. Many hours of bending over. Whacking that ball over and over and over again at the driving range. One bucket after another. 50 to 100 balls within an hour. Repetitive one directional rotation. Is this good for your spine?
In 2009, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), reported that more than 55,000 visits to hospital emergency rooms were related to sport injuries. What sport injury are we referring to? Good heavens…don’t say it? It can’t be! You are not talking about…? Yes…it is GOLF.
Quite often, golfers will experience some discomfort, pain or numbness in the wrist, shoulder, back, hips and knees. Even the neck! The most common complaint is low back pain. When hitting the ball, so many things can go wrong. Your spine and the repetitive training, re-education of altering your body’s natural biomechanics, excessive torsioning of the lower back and pelvis, are the greatest contributor to spine and disc injuries. Poor flexibility and muscle strength further increases your risk of injury. Warming up and warming down helps provide relief. Muscle stretching and strengthening can help prevent injury but there’s more to it than meets the eye.
Tips for Golfers:
When you swing, rotate from your upper trunk. Anatomically, our lower back region was not designed for rotation. Forcing a structure to act beyond its natural moment is a recipe for injury.
Have regular spinal check-ups. Don’t wait to pop in for help when you are in pain. Prevention of injuries or addressing spinal issues before they manifest is better than trying to fix it. Once your injury is presented, a whole sequelae of inflammation, muscular imbalance, spinal or disc injuries, nerve irritation and etc has resulted. It is easier to manage your back in the early stages rather than a back that is yelling out of pain.
It is tempting to say “Give up golf, it is bad for you” but we all know that is not going to happen. Correct? If that’s the case, have your spine regularly checked so you can truly enjoy golf for what it is. Golf is not all that bad, it is an excellent sport for socializing, relaxing (for some, it can be frustrating and stressful), enjoying walking up and down the greens (get off that buggy and walk) and etc.
