Rooftop bars, have always been a thing for Jakartans. We love it because of its ability to lend us a superb perspective of Jakarta from above. This is where the sounds and the smells of the traffic feel most away and it traffic turns into rows of twinkling lights of red and white. It is also where you can actually gauge Jakarta’s magnitude.
Impressed with the Fairmont Hotel’s stellar fine dining restaurant, VIEW, we finally went literally full circle as we spent a drizzly afternoon in the hotel’s other half of the 22nd floor establishment: K22 Bar that overlooks the other side of Gelora Bung Karno complex with its lush surrounding and its newly renovated stadium. It is quite breathtaking.
This is also where you get to try the bar’s creative ‘Culinary Cocktails’; with ‘all the essence of the kitchen to the glass’. But before we jump in to the culinary libations, we sampled some of the bar’s culinary creations that range from shareable bites and also some comfort food options for you that want to fill up before a tipple.
Comforting, doesn’t mean it won’t be gourmet. If “The Kampung” is the bar’s rendition of Indonesia’s most favorite meal, nasi goreng, wrapped in soft flour tortilla, laden with large chunks of beef and served with pickles and classic Javanese sambal, the “Double Trouble Burger” is their version of American diner style burger with thick double wagyu beef patties, melted aged cheddar, onion rings and served with pickles and fries.
If you’re not in the mood to fill up with a full meal, or just to please a chatty crowd, the shareable meals are quite tempting too try as well. The coconut crusted-shrimp, for one, is a tropical twist on the classic panko-crust that makes a perfect drinking bite, served with refreshing mint yoghurt and sweet thai style dip. We also love the tuna tataki tacos where lightly-seared sashimi tuna slices sit on mini tortillas with red cabbage slaw, cilantro and a hint of sour cream and lime.
Onward to the stars of the show: cocktails! We tried the refreshing ‘K22 Punch’ that blends two types of rum: dark and Malibu Blue Curacao, stirred with pineapple infusion and also the tasty ‘Calamansi Old Fashioned’ made of blended scotch, homemade calamansi Syrup with a dash of bitter. Another must try is the ‘K22 Mojito’ that is a mix of light Rum, calamansi lime, basil, and soda water served in a tiki glass that will make you wish you are laying under a cabana somewhere in the pacific.
Clienteles of the bar are a mix of expatriate professionals from the surrounding office buildings and also guests of the hotel. This rooftop bar has no inside area so it could be quite windy at night. For the ladies, Thursdays nights are Ladies’ night with every purchase of Bar Snacks, from 7 to 10 pm.
