Despite the crazy traffic, the idea of cycling in Jakarta is actually not all that crazy. As long as you really know how and when to do it; one option is to go directly to tourist attraction that has tracks that you can cycle on, such as Ancol Ecopark area, where you can rent bikes for Rp. 50,000 per hour. It has comparably better roads than the rest of Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, but keep in mind that weekends can be a challenge due to the high number of tourists.
Another good area is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, where you can rent bikes to tandem bikes for Rp. 10,000 to 40,000 per hour although quite honestly the quality of the bikes is not always the best, it is good enough for a nice spin around TMII’s amazing spread of traditional houses.
Alternately, you can also arrange your own bike tour, either with family or friends, and explore more ‘serious’ tracks around Jakarta. Rindu Alam and Cianten trail in Bogor, Cihuni track in Tangerang, are among the many favourite tracks among Jakarta cyclers.
Last but not least, is to take advantage of the much loved Car Free Sunday on the Sudirman-Thamrin main road, where from 6 to 11 all motorized vehicles are prohibited from using. Started as a bike repair shop in Kuningan, Mr. Kastono, the main guy behind the shop, is now famous among Car Free Sunday bikers for providing cheap bikes to rent. Prices start from Rp. 5,000 to Rp. 40,000 per hour, and on Saturdays especially, this humble shop opens late until midnight to serve customers that want to take the bike for Car Free Sunday.
