Cozy Lounging at Oakroom, Oakwood Premier Cozmo Jakarta

Located on the third floor of Oakwood Premier Cozmo building, Oakroom Restaurant & Bar, is easy to miss. Other than those living in the building, it is a little tricky to reach for passersby, although not daunting at all. There is a sign, and Oakwood’s staff would happily assist you where you should go.

The resto-lounge was opened at the same time the premium serviced apartment opened to mostly cater its short and long term guests. But after a while, the restaurant starts to attract many office workers surrounding the area, especially for its considerably affordable price tag, despite set in a premium location, and obviously, the food.

Oakroom serves very straightforward dining options that want to cater to most taste buds. It is an allday dining that includes international gourmet classics, local Indonesian and Asian favorites. Something that many restaurants claim to be able to do, but many times fail to deliver.

But in Oakroom, i was pleasantly surprised by how consistently good everything was. The menu is big, but nothing pretentious or ‘hip’. They’re all everything you’ve seen, and you will want to try anyway. Having said that, Chef Deden, the executive chef, always tries new things to surprise its most loyal customer’s palates. Such as with his latest creations, the parmesan wings, succulent deep fried chicken wings tossed in aromatic parmesan cheese. Delish. We dare you to only eat just one. You’re guaranteed to want more and more. And ranging from 45k to 85k for main courses, (and 200k to 325k for steaks), the price is surprisingly affordable!

Their Oakwood Pizza is one of the popular items for casual lunch or to share; thin crust pizza topped with tender chicken cuts, sliced smoked beef, and bell pepper.

But the ultimate sharing snack would be the nachos; fried corn tortilla with generous portion of melted mozzarella, hearty meat sauce, jalapeno, and sour cream, that can feed a group of up to four, I am sure.

For drinks, Oakroom has regular promotion every month, and that day I had the ‘Janur Kuning’ made from young coconut mixed with fresh orange juice; Bambu Runcing made from green caisim mixed with honey dew and fresh orange juice, all only for Rp. 30,000.

The restaurant has four areas – the Restaurant (indoor dining), Lounge area, the Bar and Al Fresco (outdoor dining). With a total seating capacity of 144, the areas transit seamlessly from one to the other and are designed to hold different numbers of people at a time. The Restaurant, the largest area in the restaurant, can hold 58 diners while the other areas can seat 44, 20 and 22 diners respectively. What’s best, each area is customization to whatever event you’re having, either for meetings, parties, cocktail events, even to weddings!

Hours: Mon-Fri 6am–10pm, Saturday, Sunday and Public holiday 6.30am – 10.30pm $$

JW Marriott Appoints New Executive Chinese Chef, Ken Choy Chong Hung

kenchoy_photo

JW Marriott’s Pearl, is famous for its wide repertoire of cantonese dishes that are both exquisite and authentic. After years of John Chu’s lead, JW Marriott recently appointed a new Executive Chef for its chinese kitchen, Chef Ken Choy Chong Hung.

Chef Ken Choy has  over 25 years of culinary experience in establishments that include a world-class hotel and resort and 15 years in kitchen management in Malaysia, his home country Malaysia, Australia, Russia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

His expertise is in a more modern yet still authentic Cantonese Cuisine, and also Szechuan Cuisine. The difference? The chef pointed out that Cantonese cuisine comes from Guangdong province is one of the Eight Culinary Traditions of Chinese cuisine, and very famous worldwide due to the number of Chinese emigrants from the area, and also for its versatility. Most likely when non-chinese speak of Chinese cuisine, than you’re talking about Cantonese food.

With years of experience in the Chinese kitchen, Chef Ken Choy uttered his excitement to bring fresh air to Pearl, “The restaurant has an established position in Jakarta’s, but I want to try bring something new to our loyal clienteles, incorporate the current trends.”

Chef Ken likes to introduce just a hint of non-traditional ingredients  to his Chinese menu alongside his more strictly traditional ones. Like his Deep Fried Grouper with Foei Gras sauce, But you will also find the traditional Abalone claypot dish, with all the premium ingredients like abalone, bird’s nest, scallops, goji berries, pictured below. abalone_claypot_pearl_resto fried_grouper_pearl_restaurant

Aldo Situmorang, General Manager of all seasons Jakarta Thamrin

allseasonsthamrin_general_manager

Thanks for having What’s New Jakarta, could you introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Aldo Situmorang, the General Manager of All Seasons Jakarta Thamrin, managed by Accor Group, joining from August 2015. Prior to my current position, I have served in Pullman Surabaya, assisting on their transition and hotel rebranding from Meritus hotel. But overall, my experience is mainly in luxury and upscale hotel, including Sheraton, JW Marriott, Shangri-La, and Kempinski.  I’m so excited with all the good things that are happening here at all seasons Jakarta. We have an excellent team of employees that are completely focused with what they’re doing.

What got you in the hospitality industry?

First and foremost, you are always able to make someone’s day. Whether you’re a concierge, a kitchen porter behind the scene or even you’re in the management. Every day you go to work, you have the chance of making someone’s day a little better. Because this business is about people.  This business is also very creative, versatile, and opens your door to the world.

To you personally, what are your hotel’s strong points?

We are located in the city center of Jakarta, within walking distance to premium shopping centers and popular points of interests. Our modern contemporary design with the great city skyline will also appeal to the urbanites. And due to our convenient location, our customers also don’t have to pay more for transportation, etc. And because we are part of the Accor family, with the Le Club loyalty member, members will also be able to get points and redeem it for free night stays, as well as other benefits.

In your management, what is your style of leadership?

I am the coaching leader; I love to help my employees identify their unique strengths and weaknesses and tie them to their personal and career aspirations. It is quite time consuming, but it has its benefits. I am the type to delegate varied tasks, and let my subordinate learn, even if it means that the results will take a while. This type of leadership works for teams members who are willing to accept feedbacks and make real changes.

What are your favorite places to visit in Jakarta?

I love shopping, especially the malls around here, as well as the more historic market such as Jalan Surabaya. I also love to find local authentic food, I love Dapur Baba. I also love a good Sundanese restaurant such as Ikan Bakar Cianjur, Pondok laguna.

Favorite things to do on the weekend?

I enjoy watching movies a lot! I do exercise, and love working out with a group. I am involved in a community that meets once every 2 weeks.

Give us five words that describe you!

Honest, dedicated, hardworking, positive.
