3. Marco Padang
Marco is an eatery where Chef Marco Lim share story of his culinary journey through an authentic and fresh Padang Peranakan Cuisine. There are some of the highlighted menus that you should definitely try. First is Barramundi Panggang Pacak, a grilled Barramundi fish marinated in coconut milk with finely ground curly red chili, slices of turmeric leaf, lemongrass, tamarind, lime leaf, and lime juice. Also, don’t miss out its signature rendang, Randang Itam Kayu Bakar, a beef shank stewed in coconut milk and cirik minyak (condensed burnt coconut oil), mixed with herbs and ground curly red chili. Another oldest Padang restaurants in Jakarta, since 1967, that serves authentic and high quality Minang cuisine. Sari Bundo is also our former president, B. J. Habibie’s, favorite. The place might not be luxurious, but it’s clean and comfortable with a really friendly staffs. Almost all the dishes here are great, so should try all of them. For a not too excessive taste, try its crunchy, savory, yet moist Fried Chicken. And if you crave for some spicy taste, Sari Bundo’s Dendeng Balado (spicy crispy sliced beef) and signature rendang are the winners.

5. RM Sepakat
Named as the best Padang restaurant in Jakarta and serves some of the most authenticMinang dishes with inherited recipe. Sepakat is also the oldest Padang restaurant in Jakarta, since 1967. The most wanted dish here is Gulai Gajeboh, a dish that recently rarely found in Padang restaurants. Gulai Gajebo is basically cow fat served in spicy Padangnese coconut milk curry. It might be too strong for foreigners, but after one bite, you’ll probably crave for more. Try other mouthwatering dishes here, such as grilled chicken, chicken rendang, and also its signature oxtail soup. Sepakat outlet is quite small, so take-away might be the best way to enjoy its menu.

Opens since 1972, Sederhana becomes public’s favorite for its huge selection of Minang dishes with milder taste compare to other authentic Padang restaurant. A must try here, and usually quickly sold out, is Gulai Kepala Kakap, a head snapper cooked with spicy and savory coconut milk based soup. Rendang and Ayam Pop are also the highlighted dishes here.

Another oldie but goodie padang restaurant that’s been around since the 70s. You can find the classics such as ayam kalio (chicken curry), rendang, gulai kikil, although a dish that’s not to miss is the dendeng batakok or deep fried beef served with green chili sambal, as well as their gulai kurma that’s only available on Friday.
