Dear Jakartans!
This week, Jakarta slowly returns to its daily grind with people coming back in from their Idul Fitri holiday, either for ‘mudik’ or vacation. We hope you didn’t get stuck in the infamous Indonesian ‘Brexit’ or Brebes Exit toll road that killed as many as 18 people during a “horror” traffic jam that lasted over 20 hours last Tuesday. Whilst in Jakarta, the traffic has been considerably light still as most schools still on holiday break until end of this week.
Experts have said that Jakarta’s burden will get even heavier as the city’s Department of Population and Civil Registration predict as many as 70,000 newcomers will flood Jakarta this year, more than 20% increase from the last five years years, with many of those come during the post-Lebaran influx of newcomers.
Following the latest Pokemon Go craze that has been sweeping across the globe, some tourist spots in Jakarta seized the moment by inviting players to ‘hunt’ and ‘catch’ Pokemon monsters in their establishment. Such as the National Museum in Central Jakarta that encouraged Pokemon hunters to exploring the museum and its collections. Since being launched last week, Nintendo’s augmented-reality game Pokemon Go has reached remarkable popularity, including in Indonesia. We salute National Museum for their creativity in taking advantage of the trend!
More news from the online industry, The government’s recent decision to change its policy on foreign over-the-top (OTT) content delivery companies will open doors for local telecommunications firms as they will be required to forge partnerships. Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara recently said that foreign OTT firms – such as Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Twitter – would no longer be required to establish legal entities to operate domestically, yet would only be advised to partner with local telecommunications operators to address three issues: customer service, customer data protection and the need for a level playing field.
