Airasia Official Crash Report & Plans for Pondok Cabe Airport

Dear Jakartans,

Indonesia’s National Transportation and Safety Committee yesterday released a crash investigation report of AirAsia QZ8501 that crashed December last year. From the findings, it was concluded that the crash was caused by problems with a glitch-prone rudder component and the way its pilots tried to respond, and that bad weather did not play a role, Reuters reports.  To this, the NTSC gave both AirAsia and Airbus some recommendations to prevent future incidents.

Thousands of dead fish of various species washed up along Ancol beach in North Jakarta on Monday. A quick survey conducted by The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) concluded that the phenomenon due to an explosion of phytoplankton population and an increase of phosphate and nitrate contents caused by high level of rain water flowing from the land, river, and sewer resulting in a hazardous oxygen level in the water. Ancol management said that a similar incident has occurred three years ago, although not with an amount of dead fish as large as this.

Jakarta residents can expect another airport to operate as PT Garuda Indonesia and Pertamina Persero signed an agreement to utilize the Pertamina-owned Pondok Cabe airport by first quarter of 2016. The airport is expected to handle Garuda’s commercial flights to and from Samarinda, Pangkalan Bun, Palembang, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and a number of other cities. Currently, Pondok Cabe does not handle regular airline traffic other than serving as the base for Pelita Air Service, the Indonesian National Police, and the Indonesian Navy.
