Flavors of Aceh to Sulawesi at Mercure PIK’s NSNTR

Over the last 15 years, Pantai Indah Kapuk in the north of Jakarta has become one of the most prestigious areas in Jakarta. Not only for its rapid growth of upscale housings, but also for its concentration of trendy restaurants and cafes that could make residents from other parts of Jakarta, like the South, which used to be the only source for anything cool in Jakarta, both jealous and hungry at the same time.

The most recent addition to Jl PIK Boulevard, one of the main roads that’s packed with the aforementioned trendy spots, is PIK Avenue, a shopping center that is connected to the newly opened Mercure PIK Hotel. The hotel is currently the only mid-scale hotel in the vicinity, and offers a great acommodation option for anyone that wants to explore the neighborhood without having to brace for the weekend PIK traffic.

mercure pik_2On my first visit to the hotel, I also tried their all day dining restaurant, NSNTR ( read: Nusantara) that appropriately focuses on Indonesian food, from Aceh to Sulawesi. Just like the rest of the hotel, the design is modern yet full of character, simple yet refreshingly vibrant. From the use of contrasting colors, to dramatic sizes and shapes. Located on the 8th floor of the hotel, NSNTR is currently the tallest restaurant in Pantai Indah Kapuk too, which gives you a great bird’s eye view of PIK.

The menu offering, thankfully, isn’t trying to be excessively modern. You will find basic Indonesian favorites like Mie Goreng, Rendang, Tongseng, Sate, as well as different types of sambals. Things are kept authentic, can be seen from the dish’s area of origin written on each menu item. Each table is served with complimentary kerupuk and also, pickles!

For me, Mie Goreng is always a comfort food, so I will be completely biased and put this on the top of my favorite food in the restaurant. Their rendang is quite good too, and can contend your go-to Padang place.

My other favorite is the Iga Sapi Kuah Asam which broth is sour, spicy, and deep in flavor. I don’t care much about their bakso, but the Ayam Goreng Tangkap is nicely seasoned and served with deep fried chili padis that will tempt you to eat it straight. The Nasi Goreng Rendang is also a great choice if you are in the mood for both nasi goreng, and rendang!

For desserts, Must try items for desserts are the fluffy and creamy durian pancake, and the pisang goreng, served with cheese, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. For an even more refreshing treat, you can opt for the classic Es Cendol Durian served with black sticky rice, fresh durian, and coconut ice cream.
