Previously known as Xin Hwa, Mandarin Oriental recently announced announcing the opening of their new Chinese restaurant Li Feng, Jakarta’s newest dining destination that serves an authentic lavish Cantonese cuisine in an ethereal, classic and culturally rich space. The restaurant offers exquisite culinary delights where every dish is masterfully crafted to bring guests warm and visually stunning delicacies with a surprising modern twist.

Helmed by two talented chefs, Chef Fei and Chef Loy, Li Feng’s menu presents a scrumptious blend of traditional dishes and creative rendition of classics. Chef Fei, one of China’s most notable young chefs is also the man behind the celebrated Jiang at Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou. Chef Fei’s innovative creations have won him numerous awards – including The Best Chef in China 2016 – and a loyal following of food connoisseurs and celebrities alike in Guangdong.

Having established his culinary career in Singapore, Chef Loy – Executive Chinese Chef at Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta – brings more than 12 years of experience in fine dining restaurants in various destinations, such as Bali and Dubai, to the refined atmosphere of Li Feng.

The menu features a variety of Cantonese specialties including chef’s recommendations such as the beautifully presented Deep-Fried Swan Dumpling with Black Pepper Duck Meat, Sweet and Sour Chicken with Pineapple and Bell Pepper and Braised Hele Crab with Japanese Rice in Hoisin Sauce.

Designed by Hong Kong-based LRF Designers Limited, the restaurant’s interior is inspired by the voyage history and spices trade between China and the old Jakarta, Batavia – when ocean-going junks plied between the South China coast and the Spice Islands, as well as Jakarta and onwards to Arabia. The junk connection has been incorporated into the glass art, paintings and the ceiling lights sculpture, which is a stylized ‘sea’ of hand-made crystal glass, with amber crystal junk sails plying their route across the sea. The contemporary ceiling light sculpture and three chandeliers are developed and fabricated by the much-vaunted Czech crystal sculptors, Lasvit.

While dining, guests will enjoy viewing ‘A Voyage of the South’ artwork, a large-gilded glass piece by artist Helen Poon from Hong Kong that features an ancient etched and gilded map of Asia drawn up in 1602 by an Italian missionary named Matteo Ricci illustrating the ancient connection between China and Jakarta.

Well-known Indonesian designer, Poppy Dharsono, designed the restaurant staffs’ uniform inspired by traditional Chinese garments; Tang Suit for the male and Cheongsam for the female. Using the finest quality of shantung silk and wool blend fabrics, the uniform features colors that represent good luck, wealth and royal status such as crimson red, yellow gold and navy blue.

Bali Island School Celebrated 30th Anniversary

Established in September 1986, Bali Island School (BIS) – formerly Bali International School – celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, making it the oldest international school on the island. BIS celebrated this special occasion by hosting an International Day yesterday. Students, parents and the staff were dressed in their national costumes and organized into country groups.

The celebration started with a colorful parade of costumes and flags from all over the world. A total of 35 countries were represented amongst students and staff! It was followed by a formal ceremony, which included a Balinese blessing, a gamelan performance and speeches of honored guests and students.

“This celebration is a product of everyone’s effort and participation and reflects one of our school’s main goals – active community engagement”, said Denise Walsh, Head of Bali Island School during her speech.

 The celebration continued with creatively decorated country booths with authentic delicacies from around the world including Swiss fondue, Columbian ceviche, and Swedish chocolate balls. Games such as “Pingpong Jars” and ”Hook the Duck” were played and various performances entertained the visitors throughout the event.

Bali Island School is the first international school in Bali and the only offering the International Baccalaureate programmes for all grades (ibo.org).

Franchise & License Expo Indonesia and Cafe & Brasserie Indonesia 2016 kicked off yesterday (2/9) and is still going on until Sunday (2-4 September 2016), showcasing more than 200 companies from 12 countries.

Visitors can see more than 350 brands of franchise and cafe industry, from Australia, The United States, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and many more at the Jakarta Convention Center, 10am-9pm, and is open for the public.

This exhibition is perfect for any entrepreneurs or business owners who are interested in opening up a new business, franchise, or just procuring world class equipments and facilities for their service and F&B business. .

This year is the first ever Cafe & Brasserie exhibition, yet the 14th Franchise & License Expo in the country.

In the exhibition, a series of business and practical workshop are held for the visitors, inviting VIP speakers such as Sandiaga Uno, representatives from the Franchise and License Organisation of Indonesia, and CEO of Action Coach Indonesia, Ari Nugrahanto, and many more.

Art Interpretations in ARTOTEL Thamrin’s Hotel Rooms

Jakarta, 29 August 2016 – Collaborating with Art Dept Id, and supported by Generation-G, Artotel Thamrin Jakarta has brought out another creative concept called #UniverseBehindTheDoors. Five couple hosts and 27 young local artists, divided into five groups, will transform five ARTOTEL rooms into surreal art galleries. Each room will have a unique concept that highlight each artist’s style and talent.

The event was marked last Monday with a raffle night to decide whom couple host will work together with each artists group. The result, couple Dian Sastrowardoyo and Maulana Indraguna get the first room with street art concept, couple Andien Aisyah and Ippe Wahyudi get a chance to play with new media in room four, couple Andhikamaxi and Karen Carlotta will work with colorful combination between 2D materials and ceramics in room three, couple Leonard Theosabrata and Irene Yuliana has to be creative with soft and monochrome colors in room five, and lastly couple Diaz Parzada and Wilsen Willim will work with some of the most talented illustrators in Jakarta in room number two.

All rooms will be open for public for two days starting from 21 October. After that the artworks is going to be moved to a public gallery at ARTOTEL for another month, until 20 November 2016. Amalia Wirjono, founder of Art Dept Id hopes through #UniverseBehindTheDoors many people can be inspired to start collecting artworks. This especially can happen because visitors will have a chance to meet the artists in real life and talked about the concept. More over, the hotel rooms setting will make it easier for potential collectors to imagine how their room can be transformed into different worlds just with a touch of artworks.

The 27 artists participating are:
