Although there are a lot more grocers and independent shops that provide special aisle and shelves for the organic and specialized products in Jakarta today, sometimes it still needs a little hunting down those special buckwheat flour or gluten-free cookies. Here is our list of shops and some suppliers of gluten-free shops, both off and online.

1. Kem Chick 

Not the largest grocery store, but offers some of the best selection of organic and gluten-free products, both imported and locally sourced ones. Many gluten-free homemade bakeries also supply their product to this premium & gourmet grocery.

2. Grand Lucky

One of the largest and most complete grocery store in the CBD area; if you’ve spent some time in Jakarta (say, a week, even!) you’ll probably have heard or come across the SCBD Grand Lucky store that would remind you of grocery store ‘back home’ . Despite shelving imported products, organic, and gluten-free options, their price is pretty competitive, even compared with the hypermarts.

Spirit to Serve Initiative – Shoes To School by Associates of JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta

More Than 1,000 New Shoes Were Collected by Associates of JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta

JAKARTA (August, 2015) – “It is an absolute honor for us that we can contribute to the society and improve education for children who would be the next generation for the nation. I hope the ‘Shoes to School’ program can motivate them to make a greater achievement,” said Karan Berry, General Manager.

“Shoes to School” is a yearly initiative to raise fund from all associates of Marriott International Properties in Jakarta, including JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta. This is the eleventh year of the program which started in 2004 at JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta with the collection of 100 pairs of shoes.

In line with the company’s social responsibility and community engagement ‘Spirit To SERVE’, the associates of JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta collected more than 1,000 pairs of new shoes along with 2,000 pairs of new socks to be donated to more than 8 local institutions consisted of orphanages, Islamic institutions and children’s shelter. This is the hotel’s annual program to show its strong commitment to improve the future of these children and to be part of the children’s future success.

The procession to hand over the shoes to the children was held on August 7, 2015 at Dua Mutiara Ballroom. There were some children from the representatives from Pondok Pesantren Al-Quraniyyah, Yayasan Yatim Piatu Al-Ikhlas and Yayasan Emmanuel orphanages attending the event.  All of them received a pair of new shoes and 2 pairs of new socks. The children also joined an Islamic discourse by Ustadz Farid Poniman and delicious menu prepared by the award-winning culinary team of JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta.

Jakarta Expat Living: Tips for Shopping in ITCs

Most Jakartans have a love and hate relationship with the ITC, or short for ‘International Trade Center’ the biggest network of malls, usually hosting a building of stores and stalls selling affordable products, ‘KW’ super (fake) branded fashion items, to pirated DVDs.

Nearly all area in Jabodetabek has its own ITC, from the legendary ITC Mangga Dua which has attracted bulk shoppers and resellers from neighboring countries,  ITC Fatmawati in South Jakarta, to the gigantic electronic superstore ITC Roxy Mas in West Jakarta.

After you get past the traffic leading to all the malls, the annoying ‘boleh silakan’, and the  shopping in Jakarta’s ITC or trade centers is an adventure in itself, and a way to great deals and cheap finds. Here is our tips for a shopping spree in Jakarta’s ITC:

1. Know your ITC

First, you need to know, which one you will go to; ITC Fatmawati is not too big but has a little bit of everything, with DVDs, clothes, handphones, accessories, some computer store, and some good reliable camera stores. ITC Mangga Dua is the oldest and one of the largest ITC with almost anything you can think of from fake bags, home décor, batik, souvenirs to wedding gowns. ITC Kuningan (Ambassador) is the most popular among expat due to its strategic location in Kuningan CBD, its reasonable size, better mix and selection of products (slightly more expensive than Mangga Dua), and with a hypermart in its ground floor. Although not really an ITC, Thamrin City is also a must due to its massive collection of batik stalls that offer batiks from all price range.

2. Compare the prices

Once you ask for an item’s price, you will wonder if they are giving you a ‘bule’ price or not. Whatever is the case, always compare the prices with one or two stores selling similar item, something not too hard to do since most of the stores in an area sell identical items.

3. Always haggle

Some of the cheaper items usually have more of a fixed prices (dvds,  ITCs are the place where everyone’s haggling skills are put to the test; always ask for lower price, as much as 50% of their asking price. And no matter how much you want the item you’re haggling,

4. Be nonchalant about it

The oldest trick in the book is not to appear too interested: the shopkeeper knows when you want that pair of leggings so bad. Act like you don’t want it and walk away until the shopkeeper mentions the price you want.

5. Try the product

Sizes in Indonesia are a tricky thing. There’s no standard measurement for an S, M, or L, so always try on whatever clothing item you plan on getting. For electronics, most stores won’t let you try it until you’ve purchased it, but make sure you do. And keep the receipts and warranty (and the store’s location!) for at least a week you use the product for cautionary measures.

6. Be really, really careful of your belongings

Almost a cliché, but you can never be too careful around Jakarta. Bring a decent sized bag with zipper, preferably a sling bag so you can keep it in front of your body at all times.

7. Come really early and get ready to spend your whole day!

Especially if you can only go on weekends, get there just as the stores start to roll up their door, usually around 9.30. Getting there the earliest goes a long way; as you can actually get a parking spot, the mall less crowded, the sales girls are still chirpy (which in some cases can mean more ‘boleh silakans’). Most importantly, clear your schedule for the day as usually you will stay longer than planned and it takes a great deal of willpower to stay as short as you had planned. But do notice that some trade centers have an office-like working hours, meaning they are only open until 5 or 6 in the afternoon. (although obviously open during the weekends)

8. Try the food

Except for the one in ITC Mangga Dua (not recommended as 90% of them are incredibly pushy, literally pushing their menus to your face the minute you step into the food court), the food in ITC food court are a good way to sample good Indonesian and Indo-chinese food. Particularly in Ambassador where rows of food stall serving Madanonese food can be found. On weekdays, this is the place where office workers from neighboring building get their lunches too.

Guide to Choosing the Right International School

Choosing the right school is critical, especially for expat parents living in Jakarta. Other than their educational gain, your children’s school will determine who their friends are, their ‘second home’ and also whether they will like it here in Jakarta! As every child is different, there is no strict formula on which type of school would be best for one, but you can definitely compare and search for the best option out there.

Here we provide you with some pointers on what to consider in the search for the right school in Jakarta; note that just recently, the Indonesian government has banned the word ‘international’ in all school names; so you will see a lot of names changed.

1. Location

With the abundance of school choices, you will eventually to find a good school where you live. But still the conundrum remains, how far is it from where you live and how much time will your children spend on their way to school? Having mentioned that, it is also worth considering whether the school offers school bus or some kind of transport arrangement for your kids. If you live in city center, it would still be practical to send your kids to a school a little further out (Tangerang, BSD, etc.) as you will be go against the commute traffic.

2. Research on the school’s curriculum & examination

International schools typically use curricula based on the school’s country of origin. The most common international schools represent Education in the United Kingdom or Education in the United States, which include International Primary Curriculum (IPC), International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC), Cambridge Primary, Secondary and IGCSE, International Baccalaureate (IB). For expatriate parents, these curriculum will allow some continuity if they need to relocate to other countries. For year 12 and 13 students, check whether the school has the pre-university program such as the two-year IB Diploma.

3. Talk with the teachers

It is important for parents to have a look, visit, and talk to the teachers. During your visit, observe; are the teachers available and friendly? See how they interact with the students, in class and outside. If possible, also see how the students interact with each other, how they walk, talk, etc. These observations will make a great insight into the dynamics of everyone in the school system.

4. Find out about the school’s extracurricular program

Off school hour programs provides students with another avenue to connect with their peers and helps to develop a range of social and emotional attributes, including self-esteem, persistence and teamwork. Each school has different range and options of how many extracurricular programs they carry. Find out what kind and how many programs does one school have; be it arts, sports, clubs, community services, or school trips

5. Check out the school’s Supporting Facilities

See what facilities does the school have? are they keeping up with the maintenance? This includes library, sport facilities, equipment, computers, performing stages, etc.

6. You and the school

Check to what extent can you be a partner in your child’s learning? How open, how far can you be involved in the school? Ask about the school’s Parent Teacher meeting or associations within the school.

7. Admission Process

Because of their popularity, some schools are in high demand in Jakarta, and some grades even have long waiting list.  Therefore, make sure you check with the school on the admission process that your child needs to go through long before hand to avoid stress and complications.

8. Ask around!

Experience will be the best judge; ask around and talk with other expat parents on where do they send their children to school. Discuss with them the pros and cons of the school they have now, and what are the considerations on selecting that particular school.

More Countries Added to Visa Waiver List & Exciting Events This Week

Another significant breakthrough from President Jokowi’s administration following last week’s announcement of KITAS waiver for foreign workers, the Minister of Maritime coordination Rizal Ramli recently announced 47 more countries added to the list of countries that require no visa to enter Indonesia, which includes Australia, Vatican and San Marino. Last June the government had already announced 45 countries getting the waiver, including ASEAN countries.
